MASONVILLE, N.Y. (WBNG) -- A carpenter from Sidney is $1 million richer after hitting it big on a New York Lottery scratch-off ticket.
New York Lottery's Yolanda Vega presented a ceremonial prize check to Donald Savastano Wednesday morning at a Mirabito store on Route 8 in Masonville.
Savastano says he stopped in the store and bought the Lottery's "Merry Millionaire" ticket on a whim.
“I saw the Merry Millionaire ticket and figured, ‘Why not?’,” Savastano said.
Savastano claimed his prize when the Lottery office opened on Monday. He said he kept the news of the victory private over the weekend, but took out the ticket a few times to convince himself it was real.
Savastano is accepting his prize as a lump sum payment. After withholdings, Savastano will receive a check worth $661,800.
“Being a self-employed carpenter, I didn’t really have a plan for retirement,” Savastano explained. “The money will help with that. I don’t have any other extravagant plans. I’ll buy a new truck, pay off some debt and invest for the future.”
Savastano said he also may use the money to take a vacation.
