TOWN OF UNION (WBNG) - Two Maine-Endwell Spartans will represent America on the gridiron for USA Football. Junior lineman AJ DeSantis earned a spot on the U-18 National Team and fellow junior lineman Brennan McQuade made the U-18 Select Team.
The tryout process begins with a non-contact camp, followed by a week long full-contact camp where the selections are made.
USA Football alumni include Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston and Los Angeles Rams running back Todd Gurley.
DeSantis played for USA Football last year as well and he told 12 Sports he can't wait to be coached by Bill Laveroni who spent seven seasons as an offensive line coach with the Seattle Seahawks.
"I'm pumped just to know what level of coaching you're going to get," said Maine-Endwell junior AJ DeSantis. "It's sweet to know you're playing for someone that's gone to the highest level of football you can play, knowing that across America they have been to the highest level."
On what he loves most about the experience so far:
"My favorite part is probably, going down there you get to meet a lot of new guys," said DeSantis. "You get to meet four-star recruits. You get to meet guys that are going everywhere all over the country and it's just special."
DeSantis makes the trip down to Texas on Saturday. His game is Wednesday night at AT&T Stadium against Football Canada. McQuade is already in Texas. His game is Friday night against UANL - Mexico.
