VESTAL (WBNG) -- State Senator Fred Akshar (R) and the Joint Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction is hosting a public forum at Binghamton University.
Professionals from Lourdes Family Services, UHS' New Horizons, and UHS' Director of Addiction Medicine are all expected to speak.
The public is welcome to listen to the panel of professionals to better understand the current state of treatment, including how Lourdes is working in schools to prevent addiction.
"We do a lot of education and awareness around both opiates and heroin within the middle school and high school settings, as well as the community at large," said Lourdes Substance Abuse Prevention Program Manager Jill Alford-Hammitt.
State Senator Fred Akshar and his co-chairs, Republican State Senators George Amedore and Chris Jacobs, hope that these forums will open the dialogue about addiction to help battle the epidemic on the local and government level.
"These public hearings where people are coming in, the panelists are giving testimony is really helping us, you know, ensure that we're directing the appropriate resources to where they're needed and then, of course, really helps us craft our legislative package," said Akshar.
The public forum will be on Tuesday, February 6 from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. in the rotunda of the Center of Excellence Building.
That's on the east side of Binghamton University's complex on Murray Hill Road.
