BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- "Little Hats Big Hearts" is raising awareness of congenital heart defects during American Heart Month.
Hundreds of volunteers from the American Red Cross knitted red hats for babies born in February at hospitals across the Southern Tier, including UHS Wilson and Lourdes.
Lourdes Registered Nurse Deneen Bush said raising awareness for congenital heart defects is important. She said, "A parent can bring a baby home and not know there's an issue with the heart." Deneen said at Lourdes, they do a critical congenital heart defect test before the babies leave the hospital.
Although the babies are tiny, their hats are representing a big cause. "They love the red hats it's Valentine's Day, Healthy Heart month, so it's a great reminder to be heart healthy," said Deneen.
