Sheriff warns of phone scam in Otsego County

Posted: Updated:

OTSEGO COUNTY, N.Y. (WBNG) -- The Otsego County Sheriff says a scammer is calling residents claiming to be from the sheriff's office and trying to collect money.

Sheriff Richard Devlin says an individual claiming to be a deputy sheriff is calling residents, telling them they have missed jury duty.

The caller then claims the victim can send money to avoid having to go to court, Sheriff Devlin says.

In a post on the Otsego county Sheriff's Office Facebook page, Sheriff Devlin says the office would never call residents regarding jury duty or to collect funds in place of reporting to court.

The sheriff advises residents to never provide personal information or money if you receive one of these calls.

If you do receive a similar call, the sheriff says to contact the Otsego County Sheriff's Office.
