(WBNG) -- Three different sheriff's offices in our area have taken to Facebook to warn about a similar scam.
The Broome, Tioga and Chenango sheriff's offices are all warning about a phone scam, demanding people pay money over the phone.
According to all three offices, the scammer claims to be a representative from the Civil Division of the sheriff’s office. The scammer alleges that the victim has been court-ordered to pay a civil fee to the office. Authorities say the caller instructs the victim that the fee must be paid by a prepaid Visa card from a local store to avoid further legal action.
None of the sheriff's offices contact individuals by phone about court-ordered judgments. Also, they will not ask for payment using a prepaid debit card, credit card or wire transfer and they will not ask for a credit card number over the phone.
All three offices say to disregard any call from someone demanding a payment and do not ever give out personal identifying information over the phone, unless you are sure you know the reason and to whom you are giving information to.
