BINGHAMTON (WBNG) – The community came together to celebrate Black History Month on Saturday at the Broome County Public Library.
The event kicked off with a youth summit where kids learned about the Civil Rights Movement.
Mayor Rich David also came to event to meet with children and answer their questions.
The Mayor says he was happy to see so many youth in our area eager to learn about African American history.
"It's very important that we not only honor and remember, but make sure that the next generation of young people remember exactly what Dr. Martin Luther King did in regards to the Civil Rights Movement. What his legacy is and how far we've come as a nation," said Mayor David.
A reception was also held for the community with special guests speakers including poets, writers and leaders with local black organizations.
