VESTAL (WBNG) – Prom night is milestone moment in anyone's life and it's a moment that people with special needs in our area got to experience.
GSR Crossfit teamed up with local businesses to make a prom for those with special needs on Saturday.
“Our oldest guest here is 79 years old to, I believe, 18 so we have a huge spectrum of people," said event organizer, Julie Martin.
The owner of GSR Crossfit in Vestal came up with the idea to turn his gym into a 'Joy Prom' for the community.
"I mentioned it to my coaches and within point two seconds, everyone said yes we are on board," said GSR Crossfit owner, Greg Rollo.
It also didn't take long for the community to help out anyway they could. Local businesses volunteered their services to help pamper those attending.
"From the minute they walk in, they are able to get their shoe shined, their makeup and hair done and it's just amazing that they've given up their time for that," said Rollo.
Once their makeup was finished and their shoes looked good as new, the guests were ready to hit the red carpet.
"It's just a way to make them feel special as they are in a way that maybe they never have been," said Rollo.
The event also provided plenty of food, a photo booth, and of course it wouldn't be a prom without dancing.
"To be able to come in here, to be able to give to people who can't necessarily give back. That means more than anything," said Martin.
Rollo said he plans to organize another "Joy Prom" next year.
