Binghamton's 150th anniversary celebrated at the Phelps Mansion
BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- The Phelps Mansion Museum on Monday celebrated Binghamton's 150th anniversary.
Using his own version of "Six Degrees of Separation" Broome County Historian Gerald Smith shared unique stories of Binghamton's past by tying them to the present.
He said knowing about our past can help when looking to the future.
"I think if we don't know our history, we're doomed to repeat it. You know we've had a lot of successes in Binghamton, a lot of it came during the industrial explosion at the beginning of the 20th century. At that point we had a diverse economy, and that's what we sort of lost. And I think by knowing that we have had this rich history, that we can grow and take us well into the 21st century and into the 22nd," Smith explained.
