Did you know that $2 provides 6 meals to neighbors in need? That $3 can feed a child for one weekend through the BackPack Program? Or that $5 allows the Food Bank to acquire $28 worth of food to help families in need? In the Southern Tier, more than 72,500 people live with food insecurity and may struggle to access affordable, healthy food. In 2017, the Food Bank distributed more than 10 million meals. About 13 million meals in our region so there is more work to do.
You can help by donating to Check Out Hunger. It's an annual community-wide fundraiser at local grocery stores to collect monetary donations for hunger relief. Jubilee Foods, Save-A-Lot, Tops Friendly Markets, and Wegmans Food Markets locations throughout the Southern Tier are participating in the campaign during the month of February. You can donate at Tops until February 17, Jubilee Foods and Sav-A-Lot until February 24 and Wegmans until March 4.
Cashiers will simply add the donation to shoppers’ checkout totals. A $5 donation allows the Food Bank to acquire $28 worth of food, $3 provides a child in the BackPack program will meals for one weekend, $2 provides 6 meals to neighbors in need.
Check Out Hunger is the Food Bank’s largest fundraising campaign of the year. Without support from the community, we wouldn’t be able to distribute as much food through agencies and programs like our Mobile Food Pantries and BackPack Program. Last year, shoppers donated more than $274,000 at the register. All donations stay local.
