VESTAL (WBNG) - The Southern Tier welcomed an Olympian to Binghamton University on Monday. Three-time Olympic soccer gold medalist Shannon Boxx was the featured speaker at BU's celebrating women's athletics luncheon.
The former Olympian won gold with the U.S. women's soccer team in 2004, 2008 and 2012. The Americans won nine gold medals at the 2018 Winter Games and Boxx told 12 News she stayed up late to watch the U.S. women's ice hockey team capture its first gold medal since 1998.
"I was just so proud of them," said three-time Olympic gold medalist Shannon Boxx. "Because I know what they went through with trying to make change, and trying to say equal pay and getting that. (I know) how they had to stick together and say 'we're not going to play if you're not going to do this.' That is a tough thing to do.The fact is, I think that's why they won. They learned how to stick together off the field so well that when it came to on the court, on the ice, they were able to do that."
The U.S. women's ice hockey team beat Canada for the gold medal in a shootout, 3-2.
