DELHI, N.Y. (WBNG) -- A former patrol sergeant with the Delaware County Sheriff's Office learned his punishment for attacking his wife in 2016.
Theodore Tiska was sentenced on Monday in Delaware County Court to five years in prison with one and a half years of parole.
The sentence stems from a domestic dispute in April 2016, where Delaware County District Attorney John Hubbard says Tiska cut his wife with a meat cleaver.
In January, Tiska pleaded guilty to second degree assault. He was initially indicted on attempted murder and assault charges, but Hubbard says the attempted murder charge was dropped at the request of Tiska's wife, who he says was more concerned about Tiska getting help with mental health than jail time.
Tiska started with the sheriff's office in 1984 as a corrections officer. He retired in 2012 as a patrol sergeant.
