Suspect in Binghamton University murder case captured

(WBNG/AP) --  10:35 p.m. UPDATE:  Police in Nicaragua say they have detained a man sought for questioning in the killing of a New York nursing student.

Francisco Diaz is commissioner of Nicaragua's National Police. He said Tuesday that 22-year-old Orlando Tercero was taken into custody in the Central American nation and was being handed over to judicial authorities.

Diaz did not say whether Tercero was being represented by a lawyer in Nicaragua.

Multiple media outlets in Nicaragua are reporting Orlando Tercero, the suspect in the murder of Binghamton University student Haley Anderson, 22, has been captured. 

The Binghamton Police Department has not confirmed this information.

The media outlets in Nicaragua say that National Police reported Tercero was captured Tuesday. 

Tercero flew to Nicaragua before authorities discovered the body of Anderson on Friday where he lived on Oak Street in Binghamton. Tercero is a citizen of the United States, but if he also has citizenship in Nicaragua he might not be extradited back to the U.S.

 Authorities have said Anderson's death has been ruled a homicide. Police have not yet said how she was killed.
