Latin American fest exposes students to different cultures

Posted: Updated:

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) - A Latin American festival was held at Binghamton High School Friday evening.

Different multi-cultural organizations from Binghamton University had tabling activities for students. Those at the tables talked about self love, feminism in Latin America, indigenous cultures, and some Greek organizations with activities that center around Latin identity.

The event was meant to expose students to the culture of Latin America, and to show students of Latin decent organizations that will help empower them.

"It helps grow a more tolerant generation so that's the idea," noted Natalie Munoz, the president of the Latin American Student Union.

Jahmal Ojeda, the vice president of the Latin American Student Union, added that the event is meant to, "spread an atmosphere of acceptance and knowing that there are people out of high school who are willing to expose [students] to things they would not be exposed to."

A Latin dance workshop was held in conjunction with the festival.

This was the first year the event was held. The Latin American Student Union was established in 1969.
