Binghamton University identifies freshman killed in Sunday stabbing

9:50 A.M. UPDATE:

VESTAL (WBNG) -- Binghamton University Police and New York State Police are investigating a deadly stabbing on campus Sunday night.

The victim has been identified as 19-year-old Joao Souza, a freshman engineering student.  The family has been notified and has requested privacy, according to university officials.

Police continue to search for the suspect. 

"If there is information that relates to the immediate welfare of students and the campus community, we will communicate it via our alert system," Binghamton University said in a news release.

Officials said that police are confident this was not a random act.

Binghamton University will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Monday. This will be streamed live on our Facebook page.

For students in need of counseling services, the Dean of Students Office and CARE Team, along with the University Counseling Center (UCC) and Residential Life, can offer support. 

Students who would like to speak to someone can reach out to the Dean of Students Office and CARE Team by calling (607) 777-2804. The UCC can be reached by calling (607) 777-2772. 

To reach a counselor after hours, students should call (607) 777-2772 and select #2.

VESTAL (WBNG) -- Binghamton University has canceled classes for Monday, according to its alert system, after a student was fatally stabbed Sunday night.



VESTAL (WBNG) -- Binghamton University has announced through its alert system, that the victim has died from his stabbing wounds.

BU says the victim was a 19-year-old male first-year student. According to the university, "The suspect, described as a light-skinned male wearing dark pants and a dark, Puma hooded sweatshirt, remains at large. Additional details will be provided as soon as possible. Any information that you have should be reported to BinghamtonU Police at 607-777-2393."

The university also said in a statement, "Investigators from multiple agencies have been interviewing numerous people throughout the night. They have reported that this does not appear to be a random act."

There was a stabbing at Binghamton University Sunday at 10:30 p.m., according to BU's website.

The alert goes on to say, the stabbing happened in Windham Hall. The suspect ran away and is described as a "light-skinned male wearing dark pants and dark hoodie. Police on scene. Avoid the area."

12 News reached out to Binghamton University Police and they said they could not release any information.

Binghamton University leaders say no further details are available at this time. They say updates will be sent as more information becomes available.
