Teacher Appreciation Week: Local schools and businesses give thanks

Posted: Updated:

(WBNG) -- Johnson City Elementary and Ann G. McGuinness Elementary are among many schools in the area giving appreciation to teachers this week.

"It's a nice week to hear thank you," said Johnson City Elementary teacher Rebecca Duell.

Duell teaches a fourth grade class and has been a teacher for the past two decades.

"Well we certainly are a jack of all trades as educators," said Duell. "We're nurses, we're therapists, we're friends, we're problem solvers. So it's a busy career and very rewarding."

This week she's receiving a little extra love from some of her students for Teacher Appreciation Week.

"Lots of special little notes from kids on the desktop," added Duell. "We have things that are called roar tickets. So this week the kids like to give the tickets to the teachers instead of the teachers rewarding them for their good behavior," explained Duell. "They're rewarding us."

At the Ann G. McGuinness Elementary School in Endicott educators got a little something sweet, too.

Teachers there enjoyed lattes and muffins.

"We get cards," said Ann G. McGuinness Elementary teacher Brittany Gorman. "We get simple thank you's in the hallway and just being told why we're important to them each and everyday. "It's great."

Gorman teaches a third grade class and says her job is something she enjoys.

"I like knowing that what I'm doing is impacting someone else and that they are learning from me and hopefully I'm guiding them in the right direction," added Gorman.

Tuesday is Teacher Appreciation Day. Teachers, faculty and staff can score a deal at Chipotle on the Vestal Parkway.

With a valid school ID you can take advantage of a buy one, get one free offer. The deal is available from 3 to 11 p.m.
