Binghamton school hosts literacy night

Posted: Updated:

BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Ben Franklin Elementary school held an interactive event for families learning English Monday night.

It was the First Ever ENL Family Literacy Night. Families gathered in the school cafeteria for interactive stations that helped promote literacy.

The event was centered around 'Jack and the Bean Stalk.'

There were stations where kids made hats and they made bean stalks out of pipe cleaners. There was also a music corner where they sang songs.

"I think interacting with the teachers is an important part of it and bringing them into the school so they are not so scared of the school. So it's open to them and not such a scary place," Shannon Hilliker, the Assistant Professor of Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages at BU, said.

Leaders say the event helps teach families that reading and talking with your kids helps build literacy and improves relationships with the school.
