NEWBURGH, N.Y. (WBNG/CBS New York) -- An 11-year-old girl was crushed to death during a massive storm that pounded the northeast on Tuesday, authorities say.
Officials in the City of Newburgh say the girl and her mother were unloading items from an SUV when wind knocked over a large tree on to the vehicle. The girl was taken to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
In the Town of Newburgh, authorities say a woman was driving when a tree fell on her vehicle. She also died as a result.
Neither victim has been identified yet.
Governor Andrew Cuomo declared a state of emergency for Putnam, Dutchess, Orange and Sullivan Counties. According to NYSEG, a combined 48,738 customers were without power as of 11:23 a.m. on Wednesday.
