TOWN OF DICKINSON (WBNG) -- Students and local organizations took part in the 9th Annual Homeless Awareness Sleepout at SUNY Broome on Friday.
Vice President of the Student Assembly Kevin Carr says the event is meant to bring awareness of the duty and responsibility our community has to help the homeless in the Southern Tier.
"No one would choose to be homeless or in a bad situation like that so it's our duty as a community to take care of those people to love those people and support those people and do our best with our gifts and what we're privileged to have and support them," said Carr.
10 different organizations attended to provide information on resources available to help the homeless and further information about the issue in our area.
One who struggled with homelessness himself spoke at the event in attempt to break down the stigma around the homeless.
"It could be anyone. It could be you, it could be your kids, we all could become homeless, and that isn't a death sentence, it's not final, it's something that we cam survive and move beyond and regain our lives," said Michael Vasquez.
The event runs until 8 a.m. Saturday morning.
