Johnson City students place flags at Calvary Cemetery

Posted: Updated:

JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) -- Elementary school students are honoring fallen soldiers for Memorial Day.

Third graders from Johnson City Intermediate School traveled to Calvary Cemetery.

Sergeants from the U.S. Military spoke to them about the importance of Memorial Day.

Students then placed hundred of American flags that they made themselves in class at the graves of those died while serving in the military.

On the backs of the flags were words of thanks to the fallen soldiers.

When asked why doing this was important, the classmates shared these words:

"It feels good because you helped some people that died."

"We couldn't be here if we didn't get the freedom."

"They sacrificed their lives for us."

This has been a Memorial Day tradition in the school district for the past six years.
