BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Levi Michael is having a breakout season for the Binghamton Rumble Ponies and recently earned his first career Eastern League All-Star selection Friday.
"I've just been trying to keep it simple," said Michael. "I try to be aggressive early in counts, get good pitches to hit, and try to put the barrel to it, and it's been working out to my advantage."
Before the 27-year-old infielder signed as a free agent with the New York Mets this past offseason, Michael was once a first-round draft pick by the Minnesota Twins back in 2011.
Through 68 games this season, Michael is batting .286 with eight home runs and 26 extra-base hits, both of which are career highs.
"It's all about trying to get the barrel to the ball, and this year I've been probably a little more aggressive trying to catch the ball out front a little bit more, and it's proven to work, so I'm just going to try and keep that same approach."
Michael will be joined by teammates Tim Tebow, Nabil Crismatt, Daniel Zamora, and Patrick Mazeika at the 2018 Eastern League All-Star Game July 9-11 in Trenton, New Jersey.
