Schumer: Show flood check results on used car 'Buyers Guide'

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) -- U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer would like used-car shoppers to get more information up front about whether a vehicle has been checked for flood damage from last summer's hurricanes or other deluges.

The New York Democrat asked the Federal Trade Commission in a letter Sunday to consider adding a "flood check" element to the "Buyers Guide" required on many used cars up for sale.

The FTC hasn't immediately commented.

The agency and other entities have warned that hurricane-damaged cars could crop up for sale.

The Buyers Guide already advises getting an independent inspection and a vehicle history report.

The FTC also suggests car shoppers look for water stains, mildew, silt or a heavy disinfectant smell.

Schumer says many used-car dealers inspect for flood damage, but making disclosure standard would help consumers.
