BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that nearly $1 million would go to 12 different organizations here in the Southern Tier to combat poverty and increase the economic opportunities available.
Given out through the governor's Empire State Poverty Reduction Initiative, these funds are part of a $25 million initiative of the governor's to reduce poverty across New York state.
Locally, the organizations receiving part of the funds include Mothers and Babies Perinatal Network, Rural Health Network of South Central New York, the Broome County Urban League, and more.
Some of the initiatives that these state grants are funding include programs for single mothers, school programs for at-risk youth, and various job trainings.
The Binghamton-Broome Anti-Poverty Initiative helped to coordinate the efforts locally and divide the money between the different organizations.
