BINGHAMTON (WBNG) -- The last time the American Legion Department of New York State Convention was held in Broome County was in 2016.
County officials announced Tuesday that the opening session of the convention will be held at the Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena in 2020.
It's an opportunity for local American legions to showcase the programs they have to offer and hopefully get veterans to become a member. There will also be an awards ceremony where veterans will be honored.
Organizers say they expect to see restaurants and hotels packed.
"We are as good as anybody else hosting the convention," said American Legion Department of New York State Convention Chair Robert Gardner. "We have the facilities, we have the people here. There's a lot. We have a great venue here of course with the arena."
County officials say this event will attract more than 1,000 people and estimate it will bring nearly $900,000 to the area.
