JOHNSON CITY (WBNG) -- It's the fifth year that WBNG is putting on a backpack drive and this year's goal is to collect 300 backpacks. WBNG General Manager Bob Krummenacker says he doesn't think that will be a hard goal to accomplish.
"The community comes and delivers every time we ask, whether it's a blood drive, or anything else that we're after all the time. I mean we do a lot of things year in and year out," said Krummenacker.
For this drive, it is asked the community donates new or gently used backpacks, and if possible, school supplies.
"You're helping kids go back to school that maybe can't afford supplies, and they're going back to school with a full backpack and ready to go. It just helps learning get off to a good start, they're not going to school with zero supplies and that's the key," said Krummenacker.
There are drop-off bins at two of the sponsor locations: Raymour and Flanigan and Hatala Orthodontics, both in Johnson City. Another sponsor is Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield, which is collecting at the Oakdale Mall main office. The businesses say it is a great way to get involved in the community.
"A lot of people aren't aware we're a family-owned business out of upstate New York, so it's great to be able to support the community that supports us," said Raymour and Flanigan store manager Erin O'Connor.
As for WBNG, we are grateful to have the platform to give back.
"We're the voice of the community and we help people, like our sponsors, help others. And this is a project that every year we ask for people to help be our sponsors, they say yes right away," said Krummenacker.
The drive runs through August 24.
