VESTAL (WBNG) -- Dave Hitt from the Vestal Fire Department has been making sure people remember 9/11 by holding an American flag on the side of Main St. as drivers pass him.
For the past five years, Hitt has spent each 9/11 anniversary on the side of Rt. 26 with two large flags. On the 17th anniversary, he stood at the same spot, his flags reminding people to take a moment to honor the thousands of lives lost.
"We can't forget that day," said Hitt. "We have to remember all of the brothers and sisters we lost that day."
As a firefighter with Vestal Fire Department Station #2, Hitt said this day is important to respect all first-responders.
One of the flags he held had the names of all the first-responders who died in the attacks.
"It has all the 343 firefighters, the 23 police officers, and the port authority officers that were killed that day," said Hitt.
Hitt said drivers who passed stopped to say thank you and even dropped off some flowers for him. He also said he hopes everyone remembers everyday and not just on the anniversary.
"I just hope everyone reflects on this day," said Hitt. "Remember what it's about and what happened that day. We can't forget, we can't let our guard down."
Hitt said he has been part of the Vestal Fire Department for 10 years and a volunteer for the American Red Cross for 16 years.
