DICKINSON (WBNG) -- Thousands of dollars in state funding has been awarded to a local breast and cervical health outreach program.
Thursday at Otsiningo Park, New York State Senator Fred Akshar announced $120,000 will be awarded to ENCOREplus.
ENCOREplus is a YWCA Binghamton breast and cervical health outreach, education, and advocacy program based in the Southern Tier.
It offers educational workshops and transportation to and from appointments for women who need it.
The funds were secured in the state budget and will be administered through the New York State Department of Health.
The 18th annual All Paws For A Cause walk will also raise money for ENCOREplus. The walk takes place on Sunday at Otsiningo Park from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
"We serve about over 4,000 women a year, but we're also in the community talking to probably close to 20,000 or 30,000 women about the importance of breast cancer," said Crystal Sackett, senior project director with ENCOREplus. "So the dog walk is not only awareness, it also helps us raise those womens' funds, so that we can help women pay for those services that are not covered by their insurance."
