William R. Dorsey Jr., 22, of 107 East 400th St., Apt. 5C, New York City, and Raymond L. Brightman, 21, of 1964 1st Ave., Apt. 12P, have been charged with one count each of first degree gang assault, a Class B felony, and one count of attempted murder in the 2nd degree, a Class B felony. Under New York State law, a person is charged with gang assault when he is involved in an assault with the intent to cause serious personal injury to another person and is aided by two or more persons.

The two men were arrested separately between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. on April 29. Both were arraigned before Delhi Town Justice Richard Gumo and remanded to Delaware County Jail without bail.

The charge stems from the assault of Tyshawn Bierria, 22, a SUNY Delhi student from Corona, NY, on Sunday morning. Bierria suffered multiple stab wounds and is in critical condition at Bassett Hospital in Cooperstown.

Dorsey and Brightman have never been enrolled as students at SUNY Delhi. Additional charges are pending. The investigation is continuing and additional arrests are pending.

The arrests are the result of a cooperative investigation that has also involved the New York State Police, Delaware County Sheriff’s Department and Delhi Village Police.
