Nichols, NY (WBNG Binghamton) For Guy Howard and his horse Aruba Vaction this weekend there are no trips to tropical islands planned. Instead it's time to get back to work. For Aruba, he's in the business of winning races, and you can bet he knows it.
"You know they just feel different," said Guy Howard, owner of Aruba Vacation. "Once in a while if horses keep getting beat every time they start to get a bad attitude. So we'll put them in a cheaper class just to braven them up. So he goes out and wins a race and then he's like I'm ready to go again."
Howard tells you, 28 percent of the time his 6-year old Aruba Vacation finds himself in the winners circle. But the relationship between the two, is about more than just the nearly $500,000 the horse has won.
He'd be lying though if he told you the success doesn't help.
"I guess the first part would be winning money, and then it would be winning the race," said Howard. "You know it's nice to be out there in the winners circle and win a race."
But the winning doesn't come without plenty of training. Aruba Vacation doesn't have much of an off-season, as he races across all across the area all year long. This weekend though is the start of the "home" season for this owner and horse tandem.
"To be able to just stay here and walk up and go race, and come back and go home is going to be a real treat," said Howard. "I don't know how many thousands of miles I put on my truck this winter, but you have to go where you have to go to race."
The same dedication a parent gives to a child, because to Howard, this horse is family.
