Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton)
A Vestal high school wrestler is as dedicated in the classroom as he is in the wrestling room, excelling in both.
He carries a high 90s average and an undefeated record this season.
Action Sports reporter introduces us to Junior Alex Francik, this week's Academic All-Star.
They say section 4 wrestling is one of the best leagues in the state.
If that's the case, then Vestal junior Alex Francik must be one of the best.
Francik, who has been wrestling on the varsity team since 7th grade.
"Coming in in 7th grade, you're not really sure what to expect and expectations are pretty high and you've got a lot of tough competition, lot of high schoolers and it can be intimidating but you've got to just try your best."
Wrestling is no longer that intimidating for Francik.
He has a sectional title and a runner-up under his belt.
This season he's looking for another title, and a berth in the state tournament.
So far, he's on the right track.
Compiling a 24 and 0 record at 152 pounds.
" It's hard because there's pressure every single match to win and there's some tough competition out there but you just have to go out on the mat and take care of business."
Coach Tony Policare says, "He's really a talent. We don't get many of those, we get a couple of them in a decade to tell you the truth, but he's an exceptional athlete, an intense young man, doesn't say a lot. He's a leader by example, but getting a guy like that is not very common."
Francik is just as intense in the classroom.
He's on honor roll and carries a 96 average.
He says he always puts academics first, something stressed by the coach each day in practice.
Franick isn't sure where he's going to go to college yet, but he has started looking.
For now, his focus is on winning sectionals and if not, he's not too worried.
He has one more year to take care of business.
And that's why Alex Francik is this week's Academic All-Star.
