Walton, NY (WBNG Binghamton)

Bridgette Fletcher is a 3 year starter on the Walton Field Hockey team.
And was named to the 2010 Windsor All-tournament team.

She's also a great student, ranking second in her class.

That's why she was named this week's academic all-star.
But she's not the first in her family to win the honor.

"It's great, especially being a girl. I mean my cousin Phil Hanley was academic all-star last year for Walton and my brother Richard has been on your station many times, I just I feel honored that I can make my parents proud and my brothers and my cousins proud through sports, but especially it's coming because I'm smart and try hard in school."

Fletcher was named a 2nd team MAC conference all-star last season.

A team that won the conference, but graduated 8 seniors.
This year, the team captain has had to make a slight adjustment, changing positions.
But coaches say that has not made a difference in Fletcher's performance or leadership.

Coach Brynne Hoover-Daye says, "From day one when we started preseason, she was positive and hard working and kind of leading by example, helping the new girls on the team, kind of showing them the ropes and how it goes."
While Fletcher is proud of her accomplishments on the field, it's her work in the classroom that she's most proud of.

"You have to try your best in the classroom. That's what it's all about...it's about school and your work. It's not about the sport. The sport is something you get to do because you go to school."

Fletcher plans to go to college and study Psychology and Childhood development.
So far so good, as she's developed quite a reputation at Walton as a standout athlete, and scholar.

And that's why Bridgette Fletcher is this week's Academic All Star.
