Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A nearly 40-year-old old pipe organ will bring music to the Broome County Forum Theater on Sunday.
Binghamton's Theater Organ Society will put on a silent film called The General. The organ will accompany the film with sound effects and beautiful music.
The organist, Jim Ford, said the instrument can recreate everyday sounds. A train whistle for example, or even other instruments. He said an organ's main use is to create sound effects to accompany silent films.
Ford, a Binghamton native, has been an organist since the 1970s.
"It's a veritable orchestra at your fingertips and feet," Ford said. "32 pedals, we have four keyboards and a wealth of sounds from trumpets to flutes to strings."
This organ took nearly three years to restore. It's one of only two theater pipe organs in Greater Binghamton. The General starts Sunday at 2 p.m.
