Owego, NY (WBNG Binghamton) An Owego girl has been sending care packages to deployed soldiers for more than six years.

Action News is featuring some of the Van Cott Girls of Merit 2012 as a part of WBNG's Girls World Expo.

Brianna Cart is an expert packer. The soft-spoken 16-year-old has helped hundreds of soldiers, warming their hearts and hands.

She's an angel. Six years ago, Cart founded "Angels over Iraq & Afghanistan". The group sends care packages to soldiers deployed.

"I heard about it from somebody at my mom's hair salon. The website was anysoldier.com. You could send packages. I thought it was cool. We tried it out and realized how expensive it was so we got help from the community," said Cart.

To date, the Angels have sent almost 10 tons of snack and hygiene items to deployed troops, valuing more than $100,000. $20,000 of that is shipping.

"I just think it's a good thing to do because I know it's helping someone else and I think it's the smallest thing we can do for them in return for what they are doing for us," said Cart.

The Angels hold a yearly yard sale to raise money for their efforts. This year, they raised $11,000.

For her volunteer efforts, Cart has been honored locally, statewide and even on the national level. She was a 2010 Prudential Spirit of Community Award National Honoree and been named New York's Top Youth Volunteer.

"It makes me feel good but I know that's not really what's important, just helping soldiers is what is important," she said of her accolades.

Bri works 20 hours a week shopping, sorting, stuffing and stamping for Angels Over Iraq and Afghanistan.

She also works at a local pizza shop, is active in her church and loves riding horses. Cart is home schooled and a senior this year.

"I'd like to major in occupational therapy, maybe psychology, hopefully at Keuka College," said Cart.

Once she heads off to college, she hopes another Angel will take over filling the boxes for the organization.
