Windsor, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The number of volunteer firefighters in Broome County and the rest of the state are dwindling.

But an event this week is looking to change that.

Saturday, April 27 is the 5th annual Volunteer Firefighter recruitment day.

Local volunteer fire stations will be open from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. to show how members of the community can volunteer.

During the past few years, volunteer departments have found it increasingly challenging to retain members.

"Everyone's lives appear to be busier, there's a lot more going on and I think any civic organization or any club will find that there's less people involved, and the other thing is we've lost some population," said Robert Brady, president of the Broome County Fire Association.

The Broome County Fire Association is hoping the recruitment day will add new members and keep up the high level of service they provide.
