Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The Broome County Humane Society kicked off its capital campaign, Help Us Help Them, Wednesday afternoon. The campaign will help fund its brand new shelter.

Currently, the Humane Society is located on Jackson Street in Binghamton.

The organization purchased a new building on Conklin Avenue, but now needs help raising nearly $1.2 million to fund renovations and equipment.

"This facility offers us twice the amount of space," said Broome County Humane Society Executive Director Karen Matson. "Currently, we turn away animals on a daily basis. We have a waiting list of 60 cats and 25 dogs right now. We needed to expand to help those animals that are in need."

Along with providing more space, the new facility will bring more jobs to the area.

The Humane Society will also begin offering new services, like low cost spay and neuter procedures and obedience training.

The new facility is expected to open by the end of summer 2015.

The Humane Society operates primarily on donations and fundraising. If interested in making a contribution, call the Humane Society at (607) 724-3709.
