Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) This week, Broome County is recognizing its Probation Department.

It's Pretrial, Probation and Parole Supervision Week.

There are more than 50 people working in the county's probation department.

Right now in Broome County, there are more than 1,900 adults and 120 juveniles on supervised probation.

“Our big thing is helping them turn their lives around so they don't end up back here again,” said Lorraine Wilmot, Broome County Probation Director. “Through that, we do a lot of referrals for treatment."

Wilmont says the county gets people sentenced to probation at a rate of at least four times the number of people sent to state prison and the county jail.

She said it's her staff's efforts and hard work that keeps the department running.

The week of recognition runs through Saturday.
