Apalachin, NY (WBNG Binghamton) The day began with 35 golfers looking to clinch one of the five spots in the 2013 Dick's Sporting Goods Open field, by the end 18 holes wouldn't be enough.

A three-man playoff decided the final two qualifiers for the tournament. Greg Bruckner's shot on the second playoff hole went out of bounds, which let Sonny Skinner and Jeff Freeman clinch the two spots in Friday's first round.

Just before the playoff the three learned an additional qualifying spot had opened up. Bobby Clampett, who had finished his qualifying round, found out he was in the tournament because Tommy Armour withdrew.

The additional spot took a little pressure off for the three golfers in the playoff.

"The playoff was kind of unfortunate," said Freeman. "Well fortunate for me and Sonny [Skinner]. There were three guys for two spots which worked out better, took a little pressure off. I feel a little bad for Bruckner. I thought his ball was over the hazard on the last hole."

"I was fortunate enough that no one played any better," said Skinner. "I got into a playoff and I scratched out a par, and then managed to get in so I'm elated."

Those two joined Danny Edwards, Tom Byrum and Jim Carter to round out the five qualifiers for this year's field.
