Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Despite the freezing temperatures, the Front Street Exit has opened early.
At approximately 2:00 Thursday afternoon, the Department of Transportation opened the Front St. Exit off of route 17.
Exit 72 closed for construction on September 16 and the DOT was able to open it back up a week earlier than expected.
"In the summer months where they work in the extreme heat, these construction workers are also working in the extreme cold conditions, and they protect each other, they work very closely as a team and they do just great work," said DOT public information officer Dave Hamburg.
Hamburg still advises drivers to pay attention on the Front Street Exit because cones are still set up.
According to the DOT, there's still some minor work that needs to be completed on the ramp but it's safe to travel.
"You're going to be seeing more things that are going to be happening here during the winter with bridges and construction - the concrete work that's going to be done and the pavement work that's going to be done," Hamburg said.
