Apalachin, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Friends and family of Charles Barnum packed into Coleman and Daniels Funeral Home in Apalachin Saturday morning to say goodbye to the local fire chief.

Barnum, who many referred to as "Chip" died Sunday from a complication with diabetes.

The 38-year old served as the chief of the Little Meadows Fire Volunteer Fire Company and worked at Lockheed Martin in Owego for 15 years.

His family members said everyone thought the world of him.

"We used to nickname him 'The Snipper,'" said cousin, Pat Shaughnessy. "Because he would just sit back, listen, and then he'd get this big grin on his face, and out would come a one liner that would just floor everybody."

Shaughnessy said because of Barnum's heavy involvement in the community, his death is a loss for all of Little Meadows.
