Binghamton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Thousands of local residents found out Friday night who the real amateurs were, as mixed martial arts made its way to the Broome County Arena for the first time.
Art of Combat III, which is usually held in Elmira, made it's way east to hold the first MMA event in Broome County. The event drew fighters and fans from all over New York, just like Quentin Gaskins, 23, of Elmira.
"It's holding me back because I want my first professional fight to be in New York," said Gaskins.
The state of New York bans professional mixed martial arts fighting, so fighters like Gaskins struggle with how to pursue their career when the state they live in is against it.
Owner and promoter of Art of Combat III, Jason Porter, is able to get around the ban by having amateur fighters compete, rather than professionals.
Porter says that he thinks professional MMA would help boost the state's economy, and bring in big names to the area.
Plus, hometown MMA fighter and Light Heavyweight Champion Jon "Bones" Jones would be able to fight here in the Southern Tier.
