Newark Valley, NY (WBNG Binghamton) One man is dead and another injured during a house fire that broke out late Monday night in Tioga County.

The fire was reported just before 11 p.m. Monday at 871 Chamberlain Rd. in Newark Valley.

Lt. Daniel Gavin and Capt. Matthew Porcari, of the Owego Fire Department, were inside when the home's first floor gave way.

Porcari fell through to the basement. Gavin managed to save himself from the same fate, and crawled back to the first floor.

It took multiple crews to pull Porcari out. Fire officials say Gavin, although burned, stayed behind to help his fallen brother.

Paramedics eventually took both men to Wilson Hospital in Johnson City, where Porcari was pronounced dead.

Gavin was then transported to Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse.

He was released Tuesday afternoon, according to the Prayers and Support for Owego Fire Department Facebook page.

The cause of the fire remains unknown. Investigators spent the day Tuesday combing through the charred remains of the house.

Newark Valley, Campville, Union Center, Berkshire, Maine and Owego fire departments all responded.
