Healthy Heart: Perfect Valentine's Meal

(WBNG Binghamton) Valentine's Day is a holiday of the heart! Instead of dining out, celebrate your sweetheart with a heart-healthy home-cooked meal.

For the main entrée, prepare the Honey Dijon Glazed Salmon featured in Healthy Bites magazine volume #59. The salmon is first seared in a skillet, then topped with the sweet and savory honey Dijon glaze and finished in the oven-so easy! The American Heart Association recommends eating omega-3 rich fish like salmon twice per week.

Main entrée-check! Now, what's on the side?

Place the salmon on bed of dark leafy greens with whole-grain pasta or brown rice. Both leafy greens and whole grains supply nutrients that ease cell inflammation that may increase heart disease risk.

Look for chocolate with 70 percent cocoa and keep it simple. Choose chocolates without caramel, coconut or nuts for calorie control. And remember to enjoy just a small piece or two. Or for a doubly sweet and heart-healthy treat, try dark-chocolate covered strawberries.
