Endicott, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Endicott Post 82 not only won the New York State American Legion title over the weekend, but they made some history in the process. They're the first team from this district to win the state legion title in 11 years.
Now, they look to continue to make history as they move onto the Mid-Atlantic Regionals in Brooklawn, NJ starting on Thursday.
It's a special group of players on an impressive run, and the guys realize it.
"It's not like high school ball where you've got your Class A, Class AA, Class B, it's all one thing," said Matt Eastman. "To be the only team left in New York State playing in the regional is pretty awesome."
A number of the players for Post 82 were members of this year's Union-Endicott baseball team. The Tigers unexpectedly lost in the Section IV Class AA semifinals this spring, so it makes this run a little more special.
"It means a lot," said Jared McStine. "To be with these guys one last time, to make this run, it's pretty special."
To make things even more impressive, Endicott won the state title after losing their first game in the double-elimination tournament. Some of the players will admit, they didn't see this coming.
"Just to think we were trying to win districts first, and we got to states and didn't think of much," said Noah Burchill. "We lost the first game, backs against the wall, so just to win states is unbelievable. I don't think anyone really thought we were going to win it except maybe (Jeff) McKeveny, the coach. But winning it is just undescribable."
A couple of the guys even shaved the numbers 82 into the back of their heads, which they hope will bring good luck. They may need it in Game 1. Endicott faces the defending national champions from Brooklawn, NJ on Thursday night.
