Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Firefighters in Johnson City will be the latest to carry a medication that reverses the effects of heroin overdoses, known as "the miracle drug."

According to the Johnson City Firefighters Association, firefighters will be trained on how to administer Narcan, as they also respond to medical emergencies.

Narcan helps restore an overdose patient to normal breathing patterns and reverses the symptoms of a heroin overdose.

The department joins several law enforcement agencies in the Southern Tier who already carry Narcan, including the Broome County Sheriff's Office and Binghamton Police.
