Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) A two-million dollar grant under the SAFER Act has allowed the department to hire two new firefighters.

The grant has led the department to add a total of six firefighters since April 2013, bringing the station total up to 31.

The president of the Johnson City Fire Fighters Association said the grant is a great help because it allows the department to respond to a greater number of emergencies and help more people.

"It is specifically for personnel. I mean SAFER stands for Staffing Adequate For Emergency Respond so not only does it help out the people in the community, we can go to more emergencies that we wouldn't," said Bob Blakeslee, President of JC Firefighter Association

Blakeslee said he hopes the department will be able to revise the grant again in the future.
