Johnson City, NY (WBNG Binghamton) An elderly man is found dead after a fire breaks out in his kitchen.

According to the Johnson City Fire Department, the fire started in the kitchen at 114 Albany Ave.

The department responded to the blaze at 12:45 p.m. Sunday.

The fire marshal said they found the owner of the home, an elderly man, dead on his kitchen floor when they arrived.

He told Action News it's possible the flames trapped the man inside.

'They encountered a smoldering fire," Paul Hlebica said. "There was smoke throughout the whole house and initial search found the subject dead on the kitchen floor."

Firefighters are not releasing the man's name or age yet.

The cause of his death is still under investigation.

Firefighters said they were able to contain the fire within minutes and contain it to the kitchen.

The investigation is ongoing.
