East Rutherford, NJ (WBNG Binghamton) A Johnson City native gets off to a good start in week one of the college football season. DaQuan Jones led his Penn State Nittany Lions to a win over Syracuse.

Jones was a handful all day, recording 9 tackles, 3 for a loss, and a sack in the 23-17 season opening win.

He started the season on the Outland Trophy watch list, which is awarded to the nation's top interior lineman.

Jones says he was excited to go out and play against the school that so many people root for back home.

"I was full of energy from the start. During warmups, people were telling me to calm down. Then we go out there with all of us on the field and I'm all jacked up, trying to center myself but I was really jacked up to go out there and play because Syracuse is only an hour away from me back home and a lot of people back home like Syracuse so it was just a good motivator to come out here and play hard," Jones says.

Jones and Nittany Lions teammates are back in action next Saturday when they host Eastern Michigan at noon.
