Vestal, NY (WBNG Binghamton) More than 60 years ago, a local veteran was held captive in Germany. On Wednesday, he was honored for the sacrifices he made in World War II.
Capt. Maxwell Preston received the Congressional POW medal Wednesday afternoon at Willow Point Nursing Home.
Preston, now 93, entered the Army Air Corps, which is now the Air Force, in 1943. A year later, he was flying a plane when it was shot down by the Nazis.
He was then taken to a prison camp and held captive for 13 months in Barth, Germany.
"It's funny, I don't remember our last days. The commanding officers gathered us all together and told us what happened and we just waited to be picked up by American forces," Preston said when asked about finally getting out of captivity.
Preston is originally from Elmira Heights.
Before the ceremony, local veterans and leaders raised a flag outside of Willow Point, where Preston currently lives.
