Town of Fenton, NY (WBNG Binghamton) During one of the hottest weeks of the year, some local kids are taking to the ice. Not to cool off, but to hone their hockey skills.
The annual Southern Tier Goalie School started this morning at the Chenango Ice Rink.
Nearly 2 dozen goalies, ages 5 through 16 are taking part in this year's camp.
That's almost double the amount of kids from last year.
The players are put through a series of drills meant to improve on their technique, angles and positional play.
Organizers say it's encouraging to see so many young kids interested in the sport of hockey.
"We're going to do this every year. We're going to do our clinics in the arena during the course of the season and we're going to make this bigger and better every year. We've got kids from Ithaca, Cortland, Syracuse, Rome, New York," says organizer Tom Severance.
"It's great. I used to do it when I was little and it was great to kind of be around people who love the sport as much as you did. It's great to see these kids out here," says instructor and Toronto Marlie Jerry D'Amigo.
There are two sessions each day.
The camp runs through Friday.
