Whitney Point, NY (WBNG Binghamton) Students at Tioughnioga Riverside Academy donated money and a large cart filled with food to the local food pantry.

Fourth and fifth graders accepted donations in the month of December. In addition to food items, they collected a total of $130.

"The word of the month is compassion and I can't say enough how compassionate our students have been with what they given to our community, " said Sue Musshafen, fifth grader teacher.

On Friday morning, John Orzel accepted the donation on behalf of the pantry at St. Patrick's Church.

The food pantry is supported by several churches in northern Broome County. It provides food and clothing to those in need year-round.

"There are volunteers that work that pantry five days a week. People can come by and get the foods that they need. It's the contributions of people that end up keeping it sustained," said Orzel.

About 170 fourth and fifth graders helped with the food drive.
